Dreamwidth Roleplay

This is not a guide on how to roleplay! This is a guide to the usual structure and assumptions in a dreamwidth roleplay community. If that's what you're looking for, you're in the right place!

Roleplay Account
In general, you have a dreamwidth account that is exclusively for your character. If you (want to) play the character in several RP communities, then you'll most likely use the same account for all of those communities. However, you won't be using your normal personal journal account.

The non-community posts on your character's journal and your character's bio will generally include specific information about the character you're playing. If you're in multiple RPs, you might want to have one for each community, to keep track of the differences.

Character Icons
The icons on your character's account are usually of your character - either cropped screenshots, for canon characters of visual media, or (fan)art, or references like what are known as "face characters" - named such because traditionally, it's when you find an actor or celebrity or model who is the "face" for your character. Since this is an anthro-furry RP, you might wind up using photos of an animal instead of a person.

Each icon will generally have its on particular expression or attitude, and the choice of icon that you attach to your IC post or comment is supposed to represent the mood or attitude of your character at the time.

e.g. you're playing an OC named Tom and you're making a post about how he's just found an adorable stray kitten and brought it home. You have an icon of Tom looking excited, which fits how he feels about this kitten perfectly, so you choose that icon when posting it. Your friend Jen tell you that you can't keep it, using an icon of Jen looking unamused.

There's no rules about what icons to use when, but that's the usual approach!

Lastly, the general structure of a roleplay "exchange" works like this:
  1. Someone writes a post to the roleplay community, setting up the scene.
  2. People comment in reply to the post to start a roleplay thread from the initial scene
  3. Each reply thread happens independently of the others; you can't reference one thread from another unless everyone involved in both threads agrees to merge them.
  4. A single comment thread is usually a back and forth between the original poster and the thread parent commenter. A third person can join - but check OOC with the people already in the thread before interrupting.

Midnight Quick-Start

New to Midnight and looking to join? You're in the right place!

First, read the Rules.

(If you're also new to Dreamwidth roleplay entirely, read this short guide. It's not rules, just an idea of what to expect.)

After that, take a look at the basic setting overview here!

Once you've got your feet wet, take a look at what's going on in the roleplay at [community profile] midnight_rp right now, or check out [community profile] midnight_meta for the latest player chatter to familiarize yourself a bit.

Then, head over to the Character Application page and fill in the four provided fields to get started!

Character Applications

The application process is pretty simple - it's pretty much just to make sure you didn't miss any major setting elements or rules!

Fill in the following form for your character (as your character's account, please!) and add it to this post as a comment, then apply to join the Midnight communities. If there is an issue with your application, we will reply and give you a chance to correct it.

If your character is an OC, just put "OC" in the Canon field.

If your character is already being played by someone else, you will be requested to define an AU to be from.

Mythical and fictional animals are acceptable types of animals to be transformed into a humanoid version of.

In-Universe Information

~ SETTING ~

The city's Clock Tower rises above, tolling the hours of the night - and it is always night. The sky is an eternal inky blackness, cloudless shadows stretching infinitely overhead and broken only by the glowing face of the Clock. The narrow streets are illuminated by cheerful lamps and candlelit windows, bathing the city in warm light. Go too far towards the city edges, however, and you risk wandering into the Shadows; dark in both lighting and purpose, populated with vicious monsters. Few people who venture so far are heard from again.

The streets throughout Midnight are paved with cobblestones, with winding sections laid out at odd angles. The buildings hold a mix of businesses and residences, there being no clear division between shopping, manufacturing and living districts. There are no parks, but there is the occasional grassy square at a larger intersection of roads, sometimes featuring a decorative statue or fountain. Flats and houses cost a moderate rental fee, but finding suitable and sufficiently-paying employment is never difficult.

The Clock Tower itself, while it rises always-visible in the same direction, is unreachable - or at the least, no one knows how to reach it. Those who try find themselves wandering the twisting streets and alleys, the Tower seeming no closer nor further than before whichever way they go. The longer-term residents of Midnight simply shrug the question off when asked.

There seems to be nothing particularly magical about the people of Midnight, despite the strange circumstances leading to being there. Some still remember having come from another world; some have lived in Midnight long enough that the memories have faded. No one seems to age, and with the unchanging night, the passage of time beyond weeks or perhaps months fades into irrelevance.

The clothing, technology level and aesthetics of Midnight seem to have been lifted from the late Victorian era - or perhaps, what that era might have been like, in another world. A student of Earth UK history might recognize odd anachronisms here and there - a public telephone booth, perhaps, or an electronic wrist watch.

~ KNOWN LOCATIONS ~

Players are welcome to create new ones! Public locations, business, shops, and residences that are established will be listed here.

Rules

~ COMMUNITY RULES ~
Both OOC and IC communities
  • Don't be a jerk to other players.
Being a jerk IC is allowed, within limits, but if your character's actions are upsetting the player of another character, rather than just the other character, you need to back off. I shouldn't need to specify that anything worse than being a jerk is of course off limits as well.
  • No 18+ content or topics.
If you couldn't play a scene/action comfortably and legally with a minor, you can't play it here.
  • Don't spoil current canon for others.
Avoid making any references, IC or OOC, to any canon developments that were aired or published within the past 30 days.
  • Keep IC and OOC in the right places.
Anything posted in [community profile] midnight_rp is posted as your character; anything in [community profile] midnight_meta is posted as yourself, the player.

~ CHARACTER RULES ~
IC community only

General
  • All fandoms and OCs allowed.
If someone is already playing the character you want to play, you'll need to justify being an AU version of that character on your application and potentially work out the details with the existing player, but otherwise there are no limits.
  • Your character MUST be a humanoid animal in Midnight.
Everyone is transformed on entrance to Midnight into a humanoid/anthropomorphic animal. It is a key element of the setting; there are no exceptions.
  • Figure out your arrival to Midnight "off camera".
Unless you and another player specifically want to play out your character's arrival to the city (in which case you need to work it out with them first), it's better and more interesting for everyone if you get your character's first day or two established behind the scenes first.

Storylines and Events
  • Any major storylines or events need to be discussed and approved.
Any events that would affect the stories of uninvolved characters or that would significantly alter the city must be proposed in the OOC comm and be approved by the mods.
  • Consent is REQUIRED.
You cannot include another character in your scenes without the consent of that player.
You cannot force effects on another character without the consent of that player.

Puppet NPCs
You're not only allowed to create NPCs, but are in fact encouraged to do so for your character's backstory and everyday life in Midnight. However, there are some rules about creating NPCs:
  • They cannot effect plot events; those are PCs only
  • They are not an excuse to RP another character; please keep their parts to minor asides and behind-the-scenes developments.
  • You cannot use another player's NPCs in your own character's story without asking the player who created them.
Some good examples of ways to use puppet NPCs:
  • The kind old badger who took you in when you first arrived
  • The wealthy puma who loaned you the seed money to start your own business
  • Your oft-absent roommate who you split rent with but never really talk to
